Day-by-Day Itinerary

  1. 1

Day 1: Nairobi to Old Moses Camp

The Mount Kenya climb begins with a morning departure from Nairobi and a drive through Kenya's central highlands toward Nanyuki and the Sirimon side of the mountain. After guide registration, equipment checks and lunch, the group enters Mount Kenya National Park and walks through the lower moorland to Old Moses Camp. The first ascent is kept measured to support acclimatisation. Dinner is prepared by the mountain crew, followed by a guide briefing and an overnight at Old Moses Camp.

Day 2: Trek to Shipton's Camp

The route climbs from Old Moses Camp across open moorland, where giant high-altitude plants and broad mountain valleys shape the landscape. A packed lunch is served on the trail before the path continues toward the upper peaks. The pace remains steady, with regular water and rest stops directed by the guide. Shipton's Camp sits beneath Mount Kenya's main summit area and provides the base for the next two nights. Dinner and hot drinks are served at Shipton's Camp.

Day 3: Mount Kenya acclimatisation day

The third day is reserved for acclimatisation around Shipton's Camp rather than a rushed summit attempt. The guide leads a controlled hike to higher ground, followed by a descent back to camp so the body can adjust before summit morning. Guests have time to rest, hydrate and prepare warm layers, headlamps and daypacks. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are included, while the mountain team checks the next day's route and conditions. The second overnight is at Shipton's Camp.

Day 4: Point Lenana sunrise summit

The summit walk starts at about 3:00 a.m. under headlamps, with a slow ascent over steep and stony ground toward Point Lenana. The climb normally takes about three hours, placing the group near the trekking summit around sunrise when conditions permit. After photographs and a short rest, the route descends toward the Chogoria side for breakfast and a longer recovery break. The landscape opens into tarns, cliffs and broad valleys before the group reaches Mintos Hut for dinner and overnight.

Day 5: Chogoria descent to Nairobi

The final descent follows the Chogoria side through changing vegetation toward the mountain exit. Breakfast is served before departure, with lunch arranged during the journey according to the group's progress. At the lower trailhead, the trekking crew assists with equipment collection before the return road transfer begins. The package ends in Nairobi in the evening, subject to trail, weather and traffic conditions. Proven Adventures can quote a separate Nairobi hotel night for travellers who prefer not to connect onward the same day.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is included in the Mount Kenya climbing price?
The price includes return road transfers from Nairobi, Mount Kenya National Park conservation and mountain accommodation fees, guide services, porter and cook support, full-board meals during the trek, and route coordination. Personal climbing gear, travel insurance, tips, drinks, international flights and accommodation before or after the published itinerary are excluded.
Does this package reach the summit of Mount Kenya?
This itinerary reaches Point Lenana, the trekking summit of Mount Kenya. Point Lenana does not require technical rock-climbing skills, but the route involves steep ground, cold conditions and high altitude. Batian and Nelion are technical climbing objectives and are not included in this package.
Can children join the Mount Kenya trek?
Travellers aged 12 to 17 qualify for the listed child rate and must climb with a parent or legal guardian. Every young trekker should be fit, comfortable with long hiking days and cleared for high-altitude travel. Children under 12 are not accepted on the standard departure, although Proven Adventures can assess a private request.
When is the best time to climb Mount Kenya?
The package operates throughout 2026 at the published standard rates. Mountain weather can change quickly in every month, so Proven Adventures confirms conditions and equipment requirements before departure. Travellers should keep their schedule flexible because safety decisions, including route changes or a postponed summit attempt, remain with the mountain guide.
Do I need a visa or separate park ticket?
Kenyan citizens should carry a valid national identity card or passport, while residents must present valid residency documents. Non-residents need a passport and must meet Kenya's current entry requirements. The package price includes the applicable Mount Kenya National Park fees, but international entry documents and visa or electronic travel authorisation costs are not included.
Is there a single supplement for solo travellers?
Old Moses Camp, Shipton's Camp and Mintos Hut use simple mountain accommodation with shared facilities. Private rooms are not part of the standard trek, so a conventional single-room supplement does not normally apply on the mountain. A private tent or a pre-climb night at Sweetwaters Serena Camp can be quoted separately, subject to availability.
What equipment should I bring?
Proven Adventures recommends trekking boots, layered clothing, waterproof outerwear, warm gloves, a hat, sunglasses, a headlamp, a daypack and a suitable sleeping bag. Personal equipment is not included in the base price. A detailed packing checklist and available rental options are provided after booking so each guest arrives properly prepared.
How do I book this Mount Kenya package?
Send Proven Adventures your preferred 2026 dates, residency status, group size and each traveller's age. Our planners will confirm space, the applicable rate and the payment schedule. Travellers should also disclose relevant medical conditions and arrange insurance that covers high-altitude trekking, emergency treatment and evacuation before the final booking is confirmed.
