Day-by-Day Itinerary

  1. 1

Day 1: Fly from Nairobi to Lamu

Lamu begins with a scheduled flight from Nairobi to Manda Airport. On arrival, cross the channel by dhow and continue to Shela, where Peponi Hotel is your base for three nights. Settle into the island pace, with no road traffic to hurry the day along. After check-in, take time to walk Shela’s sandy lanes, relax by the coast or watch late-afternoon light settle over the water. Your overnight stay is at Peponi Hotel.

Day 2: Lamu Old Town and sunset dhow

Lamu Old Town is best understood on foot, and today’s guided walk introduces its narrow lanes, carved doors and long Swahili trading history. Visit Lamu Museum to add context to the town’s coastal culture, then pause for lunch at your own pace before returning to Shela. The afternoon is free for a swim, beach walk or quiet time at the hotel. As evening approaches, board a traditional dhow for a gentle sunset sail. Overnight at Peponi Hotel.

Day 3: A free day in Shela

This full day at Peponi Hotel is intentionally unhurried. Start with breakfast, then choose the rhythm that suits you: linger by the beach, swim when conditions allow, explore more of Shela on foot or arrange an optional local experience with your Proven Adventures planner. Lamu rewards slow travel, and this free day leaves space for the island’s changing tides, coastal light and easy conversations. Return to Peponi Hotel for your final night on the island.

    Day 4: Return to Nairobi

After breakfast, leave Shela by dhow for the short crossing to Manda Airport. Board your scheduled return flight to Nairobi, taking home a deeper sense of Lamu’s seafaring heritage, quiet streets and Indian Ocean horizon. The included transfers are planned around your confirmed flight timing. If you need an onward connection or an extra Nairobi night, Proven Adventures can arrange it as a separate addition to your journey.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is included in this Lamu package?
The 4-Day Lamu Swahili Coast & Dhow Escape includes return scheduled flights from Nairobi, airport and dhow transfers, three nights at Peponi Hotel, daily breakfast, a guided Lamu Old Town walk, a sunset dhow experience and Lamu Museum entry. Drinks, meals not stated as included, personal purchases, travel insurance and tips are excluded unless confirmed in your booking quote.
Is the Lamu package suitable for children?
This Lamu holiday is suitable for children aged 2–11, who receive the child package rate when sharing with adults. Children need to be comfortable with short boat transfers between Manda Airport, Lamu Town and Shela. Parents should supervise children closely around the waterfront, on dhows and during swimming time.
When is the best time to visit Lamu?
Lamu is rewarding throughout the year, with January–March and July–October generally popular for dry, sunny beach days and dhow outings. April–June can offer quieter stays and lower package prices, while November–December suits travellers seeking a festive coast break. Sea conditions and flight schedules can vary, so Proven Adventures confirms the practical details before travel.
Are museum and heritage fees included?
Lamu Museum admission in 2026 is listed at KES 750 for Kenyan adults, USD 10 for African residents and USD 18 for non-African visitors. Child admission is half the applicable adult fee. This package includes the museum visit, but official fees can change, so Proven Adventures reconfirms current charges before departure.
Do international travellers need a visa for Kenya?
International visitors should confirm Kenya entry and visa requirements with the relevant Kenyan authorities before booking. Visa rules depend on passport nationality and can change. Proven Adventures can provide your confirmed itinerary and accommodation details for travel planning, but each traveller remains responsible for holding valid entry documents.
Is there a single supplement for solo travellers?
The from price is per person sharing a room and is based on the stated season, availability and the selected flight allocation. A solo traveller can book this Lamu escape, but a single supplement applies because accommodation is priced for single occupancy. Proven Adventures will provide the supplement and any available room alternatives before confirmation.
