When to See the Great Migration

DDaniel O.Head Guide

River crossings, calving season and the quiet months in between — a month-by-month guide to timing your Mara safari.

Ask five guides when to see the Migration and you'll get five answers — because the herds never stop moving. The honest answer is that every season offers something different, and the best month depends on what you want to witness.

July to October: the crossings

This is the drama everyone comes for. The herds mass along the Mara River and cross in chaotic surges, crocodiles waiting below. Book six to nine months ahead: riverside camps sell out first, and for good reason.

January to March: calving season

Down in the southern plains, half a million calves are born in a matter of weeks. Predator action is at its peak and the light is superb for photography — all with a fraction of peak-season crowds.

The quiet months

April, May and November bring rain, green landscapes and the lowest rates of the year. Game viewing stays strong in the Mara year-round; you simply trade the river spectacle for space and value.
